Trifles: Piecing the Puzzle Together
This is the story of two women discovering and hiding incriminating evidence of murder, through the subtle clues left behind at the scene. While I was reading this play, I found myself frequently amused at the cluelessness of the men. What made it funnier was the positions these men held, as the sheriff and county attorney. Their own internal misogyny disabled them from being able to find sufficient evidence to piece the story together. The other thing that stuck out to me was how the women were able to discern what happened from what the men saw as “trifles”. Through the subtle clues in Minnie’s stitching, to the discovery of the bird cage, these women saw these and thought more of them then the men ever could. That is because of the culture surrounding female home keepers.
This play was both comedic and frightening. It was amusing how the men were so oblivious and clueless as to what the women were doing and finding in the kitchen. However, it was also frightening that they were unsuspecting of the women and how quickly they wrote off the kitchen for holding any evidence. Especially considering the time, where in this setting women spent most of their days in the kitchen as it was their workplace. This play really is a double-edged sword because it is entertaining to see men in power be so oblivious, but also disappointing that they understand so little of the female culture of this time period.
